RESEARCH

Mixed Race Relationships in London 1950-1970

My name is Nawal Mustafa and I am a researcher based at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. I am currently working on PhD on the regulation of mixed race relationships in Britain. My research is based on archival material and interviews and has a historical legal focus.

My PhD research part of the project ERC funded "EUROMIX” project: regulating mixed intimacies in Europe" which questions whether, why and how romantic relationships between individuals who are considered to belong to different ‘races’ were regulated in the European context. Within this broader project my doctoral research concentrates on the historical regulation of interracialized intimacy in the British national context of the 1950s-1970s.

  • Have you, or someone you know, experienced a mixed race relationship during this period?
  • Would you be open for an interview lasting 1.5 - 2 hrs?

I am doing archival research but I also hope to interview people who were part of a mixed race relationship in that period. By doing the interviews I hope to find more about the lived experiences of the couples and the obstacles they faced. I am interested in both heterosexual and non-heterosexual relationships.

Nawal Mustafa can be contacted by phone  07459550207 or by email  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

if you'd like to be interviewed or for further information.

Please note the interviews will be audio recorded.
