This is an interesting time for mixed race and the adoption and care sector with the recent Government announcement that ‘matching’ children and potential families on the basis of ethnicity should be set aside because it may deny children in care a place in a new family.

It is a subject that has troubled and interested PIH members for decades. Members include adoptees, foster carers and adopters, as well as families and step families who find the apparent opposition to mixed race families to be misguided.

With the reopening of the debate in mind, we have chosen the topic of ‘Mixed Race & Care’ as the subject for this year’s AGM. There are still many questions to be explored in this area of life and also a great amount of work has been done on the subject which needs to be considered by those with responsibilities for the welfare of looked after mixed race children. Speakers will include those with personal experience and researchers who have much to contribute to the discussion. This really has been a debate that has spilled over from adoption and fostering to all mixed race families, with some quite derogatory statements about mixed race being issued in the process. So it is a subject which will be of wide interest.
