Mixed Race & The Arts
Saturday 17th JULY 2010, 2pm-5pm
Ealing Friends Meetings House, 17 Woodville Road, Ealing (map)
The theme for the People in Harmony Annual Conference 2010 - 'Mixed Race & The Arts' - gave a celebration and exploration of life by mixed race people through various artistic media. The programme showcased mixed race perspectives on hip hop, poetry, painting, photography, writing and drama.

My name is Ramon Mohamed son of Amir Mohamed and Mary Watts. My father, a practising Muslim and Pushtoon from the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan (NWFP), arrived in Sheffield in the 1950’s as part of the first wave of colonial immigrants invited by the British Government to work in the steel industry. My mother, a practising Christian was born in Sheffield, worked for most of her life in Bassetts sweet factory.

Following on from discussions at our AGM 2008 where it was decided that we would invite mixed race groups to collaborate with us and produce a Joint Statement setting out objectives to provide a stronger and more representative voice for members, a meeting with the Children's Commission was arranged for 31st March 2009.

The work provides an unfolding journey of discovery into the intricacies of what it is to be a hafu in modern day Japan as well as on a global scale in a time where culture, nationhood and identity are increasingly fluid.

I thought we should take a look at two of our European Neighbours across the water - Germany and Holland - not always best friends, understandably so, but time moves on and so do we. Alice is Ghanaian and German, Teddy is Dutch and Ghanaian, they both spent time in Ghana during their teens and have chosen to live and work in their mother's native country.
