The interracial charity People in Harmony (PIH) is a diverse organisation with members and families from different ethnic and social backgrounds. Mixed race is the fastest growing ethnic classification the UK and there are increasing demands for knowledge, expertise and research from this national organisation, based in Slough. It is an exciting time to join the board with plenty of opportunities to take forward new ideas for projects and campaigns.

We are looking for trustees with appropriate understanding and awareness who are willing to commit a few hours a week of their own time to:

  • support an organisation working to promote the positive experience of interracial life in the UK
  • help meet the ever increasing demands for knowledge, expertise and research of mixed race issues
  • create opportunities to explore the issues affecting mixed race people and families
  • challenge the racism, prejudice and ignorance that exists in our society

PIH volunteers are involved with the following activities:

  • Providing information, support and advice
  • Publishing newsletters, papers and other resources
  • Organising conferences on mixed race themes e.g social care, education, personal journeys
  • Supporting and encouraging their children towards creative self-definition and self-expression
  • Press and media liason
  • Liasing with academics and researchers
  • Setting up databases of resources
  • Maintaining the website and egroups

Specific posts of responsibility on the PIH Board of Trustees (including Chairperson, Treasurer and Fundraiser) are possible for suitably qualified and experienced people. Applicants who have some knowledge or experience of the issues faced by mixed race people and families is also an advantage. There are currently 10 meetings a year to attend at our Slough premises.

If you are interested please contact Val Hoskins or Jill Olumide by email on info@pih.org.uk or by phone at 01753 552 559.
